We’re mostly home-based, so we charge our EV with surplus solar energy. Unlike an ICE vehicle:
- No fuel costs.
- No emissions.
- Super convenient.
- Significantly less maintenance.
- Quiet.
When we do travel, we:
- Download and explore apps: PlugShare, EVGo, ElectrifyAmerica, ChargePoint, Flo, Volta, etc.
- Map our trip to align chargers with mileage/range, route, meals, potty breaks, exercise.
- Filter for hotels with on-site chargers – often free.
- Allow for variable charging speeds and understand what effects them.
- Grin, knowing that most EV-charging is carbon-free.
- Stay safe keeping your battery charged between 80-20%.
Good traveling habits for everyone:
- Bring snacks, water, picnic wares for dashboard driving.
- Temperature, speed, tire inflation, use of interior conditioning affect range.
- Insure your ride through Better World Club.
Be courteous:
- Learn EV etiquette.
- Thank businesses that host chargers.
- Interact with other EV owners – it’s a cool club!
- Provide feedback so other EV owners will know maintenance needs, safety issues, etc.
Looking to buy an EV?
- Rent one to understand pros and cons.
- Plug-in hybrids reduce range anxiety.
- 130+ brands/models anticipated in 2024, starting at $28K.
- With early adopters satiated, deals are available; plus, used EVs.
- Be realistic about what the EV can and cannot do.
- Tap into state and federal financial incentives.
Planetarily,
Laura & Gil
Our friends Laura & Gil Richardson are, in their own words, “imperfect” but they are much further down this Planetarian path than anyone I know. They are a treasure trove of sustainable living inspiration and we’ve asked them to share one simple swap per week that they’ve made (and the products they love) in hopes it might inspire you to make them, too.
