We prefer unique travel destinations, without crowds, gross concessions, or impersonal supervision. Some say quirky. We usually bring a picnic of Planetarian yumminess, and of course our traveling sporks, water bottles, and cloth napkins.
Small community museums intrigue and teach us broader lessons. Some of our faves include:
- Johnstown (PA) Flood Museum
- The Country Doctor Museum – Bailey, NC
- The Maine Granite Industry Museum – Mount Desert, Maine
- Altoona (PA) Railroaders Memorial Museum
- Mt Kearsarge Indian Museum – New Hampshire
We’re also really fond of parks with cool geology:
- Bilger’s Rocks – Grampian PA
- Red Rocks Park – South Burlington, VT
- Palo Duro Canyon State Park – Texas panhandle
- Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore – Upper Michigan
- Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore – Upper Michigan
- Fisk Quarry Preserve – Isle Lamotte, VT – oldest reefs in the world!
It’s a gorgeous planet, and we heartily applaud the preservation and sharing of history, both human and geologic.
