Up until now, Planetarian travel is the one challenge even I have avoided, but with our family beginning to plan our summer vacations, I knew it was time to consider our travel impact. How could we vacation in a more Planetarian way?
Did you know…
- Global tourism accounts for 8% of the world’s carbon emissions, with projections on the rise.
- Between 2005-2016 transport-related tourism emissions increased by more than 60%.
- Accounting for 49% of the pie, travel is tourism’s largest emissions source.
- At 12%, tourism’s second largest carbon footprint contributor is surprising: “goods” AKA souvenirs.
- At 10%, food (no surprise) comes in third. To meet tourists’ tastes and demands, up to 80% can be imported.
- Depending on the number of travelers and distance, air travel’s carbon footprint can be lower than driving.
- Because of increased carbon emissions during take off and landing, non-stop flights are better for the environment.
This Week’s Challenge: before you book, consider your travel impact. If your research inspires, adjust your plans.
Here’s What You Can Do
Make a change: Do the math. Depending on the number of travelers, is better to fly or drive? Then, carbon offset your travel.
Go a step further: Read this article on sustainable travel, and then plan your vacation. Pick eco-friendly hotels, eat local, don’t buy unnecessary souvenirs.
Take the lead: Consider a staycation or local vacation for an upcoming trip and share your decision with friends and family.
